Researchers working to improve fine fescue

Scientists at the University of Minnesota, Rutgers University and the University of Wisconsin are working on a research project titled ‘Germplasm Improvement of Low-Input Fine Fescues in Response to Consumer Attitudes and Behaviors.’ The goal of the project is to improve the traits of fine fescue for use as low-input turf while overcoming the barriers that limit homeowners and professional turf managers from utilizing fine fescue in situations where a low-input turf is desired.

The scientists met at the University of Minnesota to provide updates on their research and to make adjustments in their research going forward. They are just wrapping up the second year of a five-year project and are making good progress on meeting the objectives of the project.

The research is being funded through the Specialty Crop Research Initiative of the United States Department of Agriculture. I was fortunate to attend the meeting of these scientists as a member of the USGA Turfgrass and Environmental Research Committee.
